Rechargeable Flashlight:

NightStar's Unique Light Technology

Rechargeable Flashlight

With only one moving part, the NightStar rechargeable flashlight transforms simple motion into light. When gently shaken, a high-strength neodymium magnet passes smoothly through a wire coil, efficiently generating electrical energy. A Gold-Film capacitor, which can be recharged repeatedly and will operate in extreme temperatures, stores the energy and delivers power to a super bright StarCore® LED. Only 30 to 40 seconds of shaking provides 15 to 20 minutes of light. NightStar's state-of-the-art components are contained within a rugged, waterproof housing ensuring operation even in the most severe conditions.

The Fusion-Nd® neodymium magnets used in all NightStar rechargeable flashlights are made from a unique combination of neodymium, iron and boron fused together in special sintering process. The crystalline structure of these materials yields the strongest grade and longest lasting magnets in the world.

The neodymium magnets mounted at the ends of the flashlight are oriented to repel the charging magnet. The magnetic repulsion recoil system smoothly decelerates and accelerates the charging magnet back through the coil, efficiently transforming kinetic energy into electrical energy with almost no degradation to the system. Lasting performance is obtained with this design.

The Gold-Film capacitor used in the NightStar rechargeable flashlight operates in hot and cold environments, can be recharged several hundred thousand times, and will never corrode. Equally impressive, the StarCore® LED powered by the capacitor is practically unbreakable, has a rated lifetime over 50,000 hours, and has a peak brightness of 15,000 mcad - greater than any other LED its size. Light from the StarCore LED is collected and projected into uniform beam by the patented reflector and lens assembly. In total darkness, the NightStar rechargeable flashlight will illuminate a 12-foot diameter area 50 feet away.

NightStar Components

The NightStar rechargeable flashlight family has two unique switch designs. The NightStar CS2 rechargeable LED flashlight and the Stealth Black NightStar red and green LED flashlights have slider switches containing small magnets. In these lights when the switch is slid forward the magnet activates a Reed switch mounted inside the flashlight allowing energy to flow from the capacitor to the LED. The advantage of this design is cycle life; the reed switch is rated at over 700,000 cycles and the plastic slider will never corrode or wear out. Another advantage is a watertight seal is not required and the light can endure incredible submersion pressures. However, the Reed switch's glass envelop can fracture if subjected to extreme shock. The new push button switch in the NightStar 3 rechargeable torch has a rated life of 10,000 cycles but is immune to shock and vibration. The push button design is also ideal for keeping mud and fine particulate debris from interfering with the switches operation and can be used for emergency signally and Morris Code. Because of it innovative design, the push button is waterproof to a depth of 200-ft (61m). In both switch designs, a luminescent polycarbonate retainer is used to mount the switch to the flashlight housing. The retainer will glow for more than 8 hours after only a few minutes exposure to room or sun light. This unique feature allows ever NightStar rechargeable flashlight to be easily found and operated in dark environments.

The polycarbonate housing and internal powercell have been engineered to withstand extreme abuse. The high strength sealed housing also ensures that each NightStar rechargeable flashlight can be submerged to great depths and survive incrediable pressures without failing. Without a doubt, the entire family of NightStar LED flashlights will work anytime, anywhere, even after years of abuse and neglect.
